Alicia Bogues-Johnson is a graduate of the University of Virginia (UVA), where she obtained a Bachelor’s in Political Science and Latin American Studies. She is very passionate about global health, particularly women’s and child health. During her time at UVA, she co-founded a student initiative organization branch of Medical Supplies Mission (MSM), which is a fund-raising group that sources money and medical supplies for distribution in impoverished areas in Africa and the Caribbean. After graduation she moved to Miami, Florida and worked as a legal assistant at The PLC Law Group. She also volunteered at the Hope Women’s Center in Davie, Florida. Hope Centers address the physical and emotional needs of clients and their families by providing pregnancy tests, ultra sounds, maternity and baby clothes, among other things. In 2007 Alicia moved back to Jamaica, and continued her commitment to voluntarism. During the 2007 General Election she assisted Senator Arthur Williams, the Jamaica Labour Party Parliamentary candidate for South East St. Catherine, with his campaign and Election Day operation. She also founded and Chairs Friends of The Wards 15 &16 at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. FoW 15 & 16 is a non-profit organization aimed at improving the conditions of the Pediatric Wards by soliciting donations of money and equipment to improve the less than ideal physical infrastructure of the wards, thereby creating a more comfortable environment for both the patients and parents who visit their children. In 2009 she went back to Florida to obtain her Masters in Public Health at Nova Southeastern University. Having returned to Jamaica in 2010, Alicia is currently enrolled in the faculty of Pure & Applied Science at the University of the West Indies, Mona with the intention of eventually obtaining a Bachelor Of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). She is married with one child.
