G2K PLEASED WITH PAJ AND MAJ RESPONSE - ALSO APOLOGISED FOR USE OF THE WORDS “GO AFTER”
Following conversations with the heads of the Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ) and Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) Generation 2000 (G2K), the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) says that it is very pleased about being given the opportunity to meet and discuss with them G2K’s concerns related to unfairness in some parts of the media.
This comes in reaction to a letter from G2K responding to a letter from the MAJ and PAJ earlier this week which in part called for the withdrawal of any direct or implied threat as it regards the use of the words “go after” in G2K’s press conference. G2K in quick response apologized unreservedly to any commentator who is offended by the use of the words “go after” during its Press Conference recently. The comment in essence meant that we will through intense and civil discourse seek to expose Commentators who project a false sense of neutrality. We regret any misinterpretation.
Further, G2K in a letter dated Tuesday July 19 to the heads of the MAJ and PAJ called on both organisations to, “in consultation with relevant stakeholders set parameters that would guide news commentary from here on in”. This comes against the background of G2K’s concern about the increasing numbers of “Political Analysts”, “Financial Analysts”, “Talk Show Hosts” and “Columnists” who speak and write under the cover of being “objective” without making known there partisan leanings. G2K says it seeks to make fair the news commentary playing field and calls for an upfront declaration of one’s political leaning and or relevant biographical information as is the norm in the USA, Canada and the UK.
Finally, G2K is fully committed to the establishment of a Media Complaints Council which would serve an independent body that will self-regulate the Press and deal fairly with complaints where necessary and critically, would NOT be subject to government oversight.
