Leadership Development Programme

Preparing tomorrow’s leaders today…..

G2K is the young professional arm of the Jamaica Labour Party and was intended to be the policy think-tank of the party; to date, G2K has not failed in fulfilling that mandate. We continue to provide quality research, groundwork and policy proposals. The scope of work and assistance that G2K has provided to the Jamaica Labour Party over the years has significantly increased. G2K has been providing organizational, fundraising and other forms of assistance to the party particularly by being involved at the constituency level. Our leadership has entered representational politics at the national level, and we believe that in this new paradigm we should structure our training programme to develop new leaders to offer to the party. G2K is therefore launching this Leadership Development Programme, which will offer to the Jamaica Labour Party qualified and certified leaders, who will avail themselves as workers and ultimately candidates, to represent the party at the Divisional and Constituency levels of representational politics.

AIM:

The aim of Generation 2000 (G2K’s) Leadership Development Programme is to prepare the participants for all levels of leadership and ultimately, National representation.

PROGRAMME CONTENT:

The programme will be multi-faceted, and will not only focus on politics, but will include other key areas which are important in developing good leaders. These include:

  1. Public Speaking (to include (a) Keynote Address and (b) Platform Speaking
  2. Public Relations (to include Press/Interview Management)
  3. Policy Development
  4. Fundraising
  5. Negotiation and Advocacy
  6. Organisation
  7. Etiquette and Protocol
  8. Ethics
  9. Party History
  10. Community Development Project (Programme Coursework)

STRUCTURE:

The programme aims to target sixty (60) participants, who will be divided into six (6) equal groups of ten (10). Each group should have five (5) males and five (5) females who are randomly selected and agreed on by the programme committee. Each group will be expected to participate in the training sessions/workshops which will be held for each aspect of the programme, at the end of which they will be required to make a presentation or submit a report to the programme committee. Where applicable, the groups will be asked to demonstrate practical knowledge of the areas in the programme, for example; fundraising and organisation, and in these areas no individual submission will be accepted. All assignments must be done in groups to which participants are assigned. Individual assessments will be made in the areas of public speaking/public relations, etiquette and protocol, and ethics. These aspects will however also require group submissions. Each member will have a role to play in his/her group and must contribute to the group’s assignment.

As a part of the overall assessment, there will be a community development project which will greatly influence participants’ certification. Each group will have to identify and create its own community project, however, all proposed community projects must first be sanctioned by G2K’s Management Committee and must be executed under the banner of G2K. An outline of the proposed project should be presented to the programme committee by the month of February in each programme year, and each community project should be fully executed by November of each programme year.

PROGRAMME PARTICIPANTS:

The programme will have sixty (60) participants each year. Participants in the programme will be drawn from G2K’s Central Executive and Constituency Support Units (CSUs) across the island. As a means of promoting gender equity in our organisation and in the programme, an equal number of male and female participants will be enrolled each in the programme each year.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION:

All participants in the programme must be a registered member of G2K for at least one (1) year. Participants must also be proposed by their relevant CSU’s or G2K’s Central Executive Committee.

PROGRAMME DURATION:

The duration of the programme will be eleven (11) months in each year, January to November.
