PATRICK ROBERTS AND POLITICAL TRANSFORMATION

Press Release Date:
Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Generation 2000 (G2K), the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) takes full note of Patrick Roberts’ attorney Valerie Neita-Robertson’s attempt at protecting her client. We have no issue with that because it is her right and responsibility. Indeed we would be surprised if she was any less vociferous in her defense of him as we are sure he compensates her handsomely for her efforts.

However, G2K believes in transformational politics and knows that in order for Jamaica to move forward certain standards have to be maintained. G2K does not think that in any properly functioning democracy that a man who is before the courts on a gun related charge should be endorsed by any political party to sit in Parliament.

We agree with the Jamaica Observer Editorial of November 2 titled “Getting rid of all discredited political candidates” not only in title but also in detail when it says “Anyone, including an MP, who is currently facing criminal charges, cannot be a candidate until they are exonerated”.

We note that the PNP headed by Mrs Portia Simpson Miller continues to send the wrong signals to the nation and the retention of Mr Roberts further corroborates that belief.

G2K is highly doubtful that the PNP is willing to be a partner in the transformation of our political system. This is evidenced by their leaders dithering in relation to the dismantling of garrisons debate and their unwillingness even after four years to tell the truth in open court in relation to the Trafigura matter. What do they have to hide?

At this stage we call on members of the civil society coalition and other lobby groups to take a closer look at the PNP and to make their voices heard on these two issues. The groups have been instrumental in bringing issues of political responsibility and transformation to the national agenda and we are sure they will continue on this path.
