THE PNP AND THE TRAFIGURA AFFAIR

Press Release Date:
Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Generation 2000 (G2K) the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party today expressed shock and dismay at the continued attempts by the Peoples National Party to prevent the Jamaican public from hearing the truth behind the “Trafigura Affair”.

G2K notes that despite the PNP and its president The Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller vehement criticisms of the Government and calls for transparency and accountability on the election campaign platform, the PNP has been waging a legal battle against efforts by the team of investigators from the Netherlands to have senior officials of the PNP answer questions regarding bribery allegations against Trafigura.

G2K also noted that the PNP has failed over the past 5 years to answers critical questions on the Trafigura affair and that the Office of the Contractor General was of the opinion that former PNP General Secretary Colin Campbell hindered and obstructed the OCG’s investigative efforts into the sums paid by Trafigura.

G2K stressed that the PNP’s attempt to have the questions answered in private and to have the matter further delayed is in stark contrast to tenants of good governance and betrays the Parliamentary Opposition’s obligation to uphold the Jamaica’s commitment to the Mutual Assistance (Criminal Matters) Act.

G2K called upon all well thinking Jamaicans and members of Civil Society to call upon the PNP and its President Portia Simpson Millier to desist from their attempts to frustrate the attempts of the Dutch Investigators and to once and for all come clean with the Jamaica people regarding the Trafigura Affair.
